26 May 2009: Fairness for India and China

China now emits 18% of total global greenhouse gases. This is the same as the USA – possibly more. So, it is obviously essential to engage the Chinese people, government and businesses over climate control. But this doesn’t mean that China and the US (or Europe) are equally ‘responsible’.

21 May 2009: Definite progress in the US, possible progress in China

President Obama has announced proposals to reduce US car emissions by 34% by 2016, by setting US-wide standards for fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, it was reported this week (by the Guardian newspaper) that the Bush administration had held constructive talks with the Chinese government about controlling climate change.

People often use the word ‘energy’ when they actually mean electricity. Only 20% of EU energy consumption is electricity (although this will rise as transport becomes increasingly electric.). The rest is for heat and for transport and, therefore, it is essential to expand renewable heat very substantially.

18 May 2009: The Indian Congress and climate

The Congress Party has won India’s general election, so will be in power for a further five years – and it looks like its position will more be more secure than during the previous five. This is significant because, arguably, it is crucial for India to now have a strong government as it is impossible to understate India’s importance as far as climate change is concerned.
