I like to buy organic food, because of all the good reasons one should buy organic. However, I also like to buy local food – for all the other good reasons that it’s good to buy local. So which should I buy?

Angela Merkel’s victory in Germany’s election was not unexpected. What was less clear was who her coalition partner would be, but we now know that it will be the FDP. This party is liberal, in both economic and social senses. It is also very pro-business and in favour of tax cuts and is now arguing for reductions in subsidies.

What about boring old natural gas? I can’t find any mention of it anywhere on your site and I wonder how much you or your readers know about the recent revolution in unconventional “shale” gas which has meant some geologists think that there is nine times more natural gas available on a planetary scale than thought as little as two or three years ago.

There has been only modest progress at the UN and G20 meetings this week. At the UN summit, the Chinese government recognised the need to restrain its greenhouse emissions, though it talked only of undefined carbon intensity targets, rather than targets for reducing actual emissions.

Today, there is a UN Climate Summit, which Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called to inject momentum into the Copenhagen negotiations. And later this week, there will be intensive climate discussions between developed and rapidly developing nations at a G20 meeting. So, by the weekend, we will have a clearer idea of whether world leaders are serious or not about controlling climate change.

On Thursday, I launched a report I wrote for the Centre for European Reform on how the EU should meet its 2020 target that 20% of all energy should be from renewable sources. Meeting the target would help control climate change, greatly increase EU energy security and create many new jobs and industries.
