9 November 2009: Little progress, just a dustpan and brush

The Finance Ministers of the G20 economies met over the weekend in Scotland. UK Prime Minister Brown, who attended the meeting, won headlines for his support for a tax on financial transactions, the so-called Tobin Tax. However, Brown did not win support, notably from the US, and the finance ministers made no significant progress on low-carbon finance.

5 November 2009: $26 billion for US rail

Warren Buffet, the iconic investor who has proved time and again that it is quite possible to ‘pick winners’, has made his biggest investment so far – $26 billion in one of the main rail operators in the US, Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF). It is good news that Buffet regards rail as a future winner.
