Question: What is Nigeria’s contribution to the global annual greenhouse gas emissions?

Question mark #2Edy, 7 December 2009

In 1998 (the most recent year for which figures are available), Nigeria was responsible for only 0.3% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Over half of Nigeria’s CO2 emissions that year were a result of gas flaring. (For more information, see Earthtrends: Climate and Atmosphere – Nigeria.)

This figure does not include emissions resulting from land use change. These are estimated to double Nigeria’s emissions, meaning that total emissions from Nigeria are approximately half a percent of the global annual total.
